My Story
Pamela Barrett was born the youngest of seven children. Following the footsteps of her older siblings was a challenge for her. Thriving for success in her younger years was a struggle as much was expected of her. Pamela was a very involved student in Middle School as she participated in Cheerleading, Basketball and also a member of the School Choir. During this time Pamela found school to be very rewarding. Happily she was accepted to her first High School of choice. However, Pamela was pregnant at the age of seventeen and was asked to attend an alternative school which she declined. With much perseverance she proudly walked the isle of Carnage Hall with her graduating class. She later went to a trade school and was offered a great job as an Executive Secretary for a District Manager of a New York Telephone company. At this point, life seemed to be bright. Pamela lost her first love, her dad before her first child was born. Her heart was broken because her dad didn't get to meet his grandson. Pamela, parents and family were of great support and they were very important to her. She fell in love and got married, which gave her a sense of security; however, marriage was not like the fairytale she imagined. After 8 years of her marriage it ended abruptly. Her sense of worth was lost. Learning to mend her broken heart was difficult while working and raising her sons was challenging and overwhelming. Looking for happiness in all the wrong places, Pamela fell into a lavish lifestyle with parties, alcohol and drugs. Her Life had spiraled out of control; however, with God's grace her life was changed and her focus was now re-aligned. Pamela began volunteering which gave her a new sense of purpose.now
Pamela was now a single mother of three and wanted to help single mothers navigate motherhood and its challenges. Her life challenges gave her the passion for helping others which led her to mentor parents and students in her community. Pamela increased her family by fostering children which led to adoption. Shewas now a mother of five and becamethe PTA president of her children's school, serving on committees throughout her district. Working with the principal and staff to better the education of students, organizing parent workshops and student events. Pamela was also the liaison to her local civic association as shehelped to bridge the gap between the community and her school.
Event planning became her second love. Organizing and planning weddings and corporate events. Her attention to detail made her events elegant and well organized. Pamela has 25 years of experience as a civilian employee of the New York City police department. This gave her the knowledge and experience to share with those who are interested in a career in civil service. . Pamela is a civic minded individual, always on the lookout for ways to volunteer her time and resources for the betterment of her community. Her dedication to public service has inspired those around her to get involved to make a difference in their own way. Being of help to women is her life's passion.
Upon her retirement Pamela was excited about volunteering with Beautiful Vessel Housing & Family Development. This is a Christian-based nonprofit dedicated to serving the less fortunate with mentoring and other resources. Being a part of this great mission has been an extension of her passion and has given her a new sense of purpose.
